View of Pollepel Island and Banneman's Castle.
Banneman's Castle is named after its architect and creator, Francis Bannerman VI (1851-1918) Francis was an army surplus provider and began construction of this fortress in 1901 in order to house the stores of surpluses he purchased after the Spanish-American war. Before finishing the site, he passed away in 1918 and construction was halted. By 1969, after years of tourists coming to the island to see the castle, a series of fires and explosions had rocked the island and its main attraction to the point of closure by New York State due to safety purposes.

Uh, actually, that would be "looking DOWNriver"... (These people don't know nothing about New York!)
LOL
Right across from West Point is Constitution Island, and Constitution Marsh. We've canoed around that area a couple times!
Ah yes, Bannerman's island or castle. Saw it every time we drove over the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge. We used to imagine owning that superb piece of real estate!
In that same castle photo, you can see the college Dad worked at (Mount Saint Mary's) in the top right hand corner...
Looks like you had a great time!
